How Often to Replace a Car Battery

Car Battery

Are you wondering how often you need to replace a car battery? Service professionals will typically recommend that you replace your Mercedes-Benz car battery every 4-5 years. However, it’s important to note that there are other factors that can impact battery life and cause you to need to change your battery sooner. Find out more about when to replace your Mercedes-Benz car battery and how to improve your battery life with the Mercedes-Benz of Eugene service team

Signs Your Mercedes-Benz Battery Needs Replacing

There are some warning signs to look out for that can alert you that your battery is nearing the end of its life. Typical signs include:

  • Dimming headlights
  • Unexpected power fluctuations
  • Increased need for engine revving or jump starts
  • It can take longer to start the engine when you turn the key/push the button

Common Causes of Mercedes-Benz Battery Deterioration

  • Extreme Weather: High temperatures can cause the battery fluids to evaporate, causing your battery to have a shorter lifespan. Extreme cold can also cause your battery to lose its charge.
  • Jump starts: Having to frequently jumpstart your vehicle will also impact the life of your battery. Avoid leaving lights on or letting your engine idle for an extended period of time so you don’t unnecessarily drain your battery.
  • Vibrations: Whether you frequent rough roads or your battery’s clamps are loose, battery vibration will cause it to break down faster.
  • Time: Batteries have a finite number of charge cycles they’re able to complete.

For more information on how long your Mercedes-Benz battery should last, you can review your owner’s manual or reach out to the Mercedes-Benz of Eugene service center.

Testing Your Car Battery

While most vehicles have their batteries tested as part of regular maintenance, you can also perform a quick check at home using one of the following methods:

Headlight Test

  1. Keep the car in park, turn on your engine, and turn on your headlights.
  2. Next, rev the engine and watch to see if the headlight brightness changes.
  3. If the headlights get brighter, that means that the battery current isn’t strong enough to idle and maintain the brightness of the headlights.
  4. You’ll need to take your vehicle to a service center for additional help.

Digital Multimeter:

  1. Set the voltmeter to 20 DC volts.
  2. Open the hood and touch the black (negative) terminal with the black (negative) meter probe.
  3. Touch the red (positive) terminal with the red (positive) meter probe.
  4. Have a second person turn on the headlight headlights and check the voltmeter reading.
  5. If the temperature is at 80 degrees, a charge of 12.5 volts or higher means your battery is fully charged. A battery that is 75% charged will read at 12.3 volts and a battery with a charge of 25% or less will read at 11.8 volts or lower.
