How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS Charging

Many Eugene drivers are making the switch to electric vehicles. But if you’ve ever wondered “How long does it take to charge an electric car?” Mercedes-Benz of Eugene can help! Electric car charging times depend on several factors, like which type of charging you choose and what make and model of electric car you drive. Read on to learn about the three types of EV charging — domestic charging, rapid domestic charging, and public charging, and contact us if you have questions.

Electric Car Charging Times by Type

  1. Public Charging: You’ve probably seen many of the public charging stations around Springfield at parking garages, shopping malls, hotels, and more. Often you’ll find them at big national box stores like Kohls. Walmart, and Walgreens. Plus, more and more charging stations are being added across the United States. It makes charging on the go easier, but you will still need an at-home charging station.
  2. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): A standard three-prong 110V/120V charging outlet is called a Level 1. It doesn’t provide a quick charging speed, but it’s a helpful option for topping off some of the charge you used up during your Roseburg commute. With Level 1 charging, it generally takes around 24 hours or more to obtain a full charge.
  3. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 charging stations require professional installation by a licensed electrician and usually use 240V+ chargers. They are manufactured specifically for your brand of vehicle. They offer significantly faster electric car charging time than a standard grounded residential outlet. You can get up to an 80% charge in about half an hour or forty-five minutes with Level 2 charging, but the last 20% of the charge will take longer due to a diminishing rate of charging speed.

Typical Domestic Charging Electric Car Charging Time

Here is a summary of domestic car charging times:

  • Level 1 EV charging takes 24 hours to several days to fully charge an electric vehicle.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes several hours, but you can sometimes achieve between 60-200 miles of range in only about 20-30 minutes. This is why most Corvallis drivers combine daytime “top-off” charging of Level 2 with overnight Level 1 charging.

Remember, your electric car charging times will be even faster if you choose a Mercedes-Benz hybrid vehicle because hybrid vehicles don’t only use electricity. They combine electric battery power for short drives and then automatically switch over to gasoline power as needed for long drives beyond Eugene.

Typical Public Charging Electric Car Charging Time

How long does it take to charge an electric car at a public station? Public stations charging times vary because some use 22 kW charging, some 43-50 kW rapid charging, and others 150 kW rapid charging. So, you might get a full charge (0-100%) in about an hour, or it could take 4 or more hours to get a full charge.
