One of the first things you need to do, even before buying your Mercedes-Benz EV, is think about and install an electric vehicle home charger. Electric vehicles are especially appealing to Springfield and Roseburg drivers looking to lower maintenance costs, reduce their carbon footprint, along with other advantages. When you are preparing for your EV, you’ll need to get an electric vehicle charging station equipped in your home. Dive into the five steps to prepare your home for an electric vehicle and learn more about electric vehicle charging, batteries and more with Mercedes-Benz of Eugene.
It’s time to do research on the electric vehicle home charger that will suit your needs. If you haven’t already done research on types of EV chargers, now is a good time to start. As a refresher, most home car charging systems fall into Level 1 or Level 2. Level 1 electric vehicle charging can take days because it is simply your traditional 120-volt home outlet. Level 2 charging on the other hand, takes just a few hours. It can give you 60-200 miles of range in 20-30 minutes depending on your vehicle. This is usually preferred by electric car drivers in the Eugene area. The last option is a public electric vehicle charging station, which you’ll need to scout these out around town and make sure you are equipped with the proper charging equipment. Learn more about the different charging levels in our guide.
To prepare your home for an electric vehicle, you’ll need to choose a space to have designated as your charging area. If it’s been a while since you cleaned out or organized your garage, now is the time to do it! Make sure that you get your garage ready for an EV before you take delivery! You may wish to clean out clutter first if your garage has been used as a storage space for a long time.
Most new homes come with a 100 Amp power panel, but you can find the specific amperage rating printed on your main circuit breaker. The power panel in your home distributes electricity throughout the entire building. Next, you’ll want to assess how much electrical energy you consistently use in your house by performing a self-assessment prior to installation. This is to prevent overloading your electric distribution panel.
Next, hire an electrician so you can discuss any concerns you have about your power consumption, and adding your electric vehicle home charger. While you are at it, have them install a dedicated 240-volt plug or add a hardwired circuit back to the power panel. This could cost a couple hundred dollars, but could be up to $1,000 or $3,000 if it’s found that your power panel is not sufficient as-is and requires upgrading.
If you haven’t decided, researched, and purchased an EV charger at this point, now is the time to do it. You should also have an electrician that you trust in Corvallis to install your home electric charging station.
